How to tame your jumpy attention span?

Do you have a short attention span?

The modern world does not help us to stay focused. Millions of messages constantly bombard us: buy, learn, explore, visit, try…


If you are like me, you may find it frustrating and overwhelming. I want to do it all - a voice in my head

screams! The good old FOMO kicks in. When I am distracted by all these messages, it’s hard for me to focus.


What to do at this moment?



Awareness is the key. Observe and acknowledge what you are going through. Emotions come and go. Thoughts come and go. Remember, thoughts are just thoughts, you don’t have to act on them.

Just observe your state and allow yourself to stay with it and in a bit of time, you will be able to gather your thoughts. If you are doing something that requires concentration and ideas are knocking in your brain, note them. Say to yourself that you will look into them later and continue with the task at hand. It will be hard at first, but with practice, you will find it easier to control and direct your attention.


Finally, if you cannot focus, do not beat and label yourself.



Take responsibility for your actions (yes, I am distracted now) and commit to doing the necessary task (I will let myself calm down by observing my thoughts and then continue with work).

We are all humans. It is ok not to be perfect and efficient all the time.

Life is long, so as long as you are moving in the direction that you have set yourself you are ok.
